It was founded in 1991 as the Australian Catholic University by the amalgamation of four Catholic tertiary institutions in eastern Australia: Catholic College of Education Sydney in New South Wales, Aquinas College in Victoria, McAuley College in Queensland, and Signadou College of Education in the Australian Capital Territory.
