The Institution of New England was first established in 1938 as New England University College, and it became an autonomous university in 1954. Its open nature is noteworthy. The university, whose main campus is in the city of Armidale in northern central New South Wales, was the country's first to be established outside a state capital and currently enrols about 22,300 students pursuing higher education.
There are various locations across Armidale where universities have campuses. The institution is located on 74 hectares of land, and its northern campus is only 5 kilometres from the city's centre. The old "Booloominbah" homestead is one of the buildings that the college still preserves. Additionally, the campus has top-notch athletic facilities, stores, restaurants, daycare centres, medical facilities, post offices, and banking services. In addition to these, the university's Newling campus is home to the Heritage Center and other structures connected to the former Armidale College of Advanced Education.
The institution provides over 200 programmes with on-campus and online education alternatives. The university maintains three faculties that together house nine multidisciplinary schools in order to provide education to its students. Additionally, the organisation awards approximately $18 million in funding to staff members and students who are participating in research each year in addition to offering scholarships and prizes.
In numerous fields of study, the institution conducts both primary and applied research. Through their contributions to fields including agricultural economics, rural science, linguistics, educational administration, and archaeology, students and research staff members enjoy a global reputation. In addition to this, the institution maintains one of Australia's most extensive systems of residential colleges, giving its students good housing alternatives.
The institution also takes pride in its alumni, many of whom are now industry leaders. More than 100,000 students from Australia and abroad received degrees from the university. The university has a vibrant alumni network that supports and assists it in growing its initiatives and services.
