The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology, formerly known as the Nelson Technical School, was founded in 1904. Plumbing, commerce, trade, secretarial, cooking, and engineering were among the first courses offered. This institute joined with Nelson College in 1930, offering students a variety of new vocational and part-time degrees. Nelson Polytechnic became an independent technical institute in 1971.
The New Zealand Qualifications Authority has approved NMIT as a government-funded institution. It currently provides courses in the arts, engineering, business, computing and information technology, social sciences, writing, and tourism, among other areas.
This institute had a total of 7,218 students enrolled in the 2018 academic year. There were 1,357 international students in this figure. In the same year, the percentage of female students was 53.30 percent, while the percentage of male students was 46.70 percent. The Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology employed 136 academics and 154 administrative and commercial support personnel in 2018. The NZ$3000 Bachelor's Degree Scholarship and English Language Pathway Scholarships are available to international students at this institute.

- NZD$3,000 Bachelor’s Degree scholarship is for international students enrolling onto full Bachelor’s Degree programmes starting between July 2019 and December 2020.
