Edge Hill Institution is a campus-based, public university that first opened its doors as Edge Hill College in 1885. It was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. In 1959, the first male pupils were admitted. The Privy Council granted Edge Hill the "Taught Degree Awarding Powers" in 2005. Notably, on May 18, 2006, it changed its name to Edge Hill University. The university's first chancellor was Tanya Byron. He was a broadcaster, novelist, columnist, and clinical psychologist.

In addition to teacher training programmes, Edge Hill University also provides B.Sc., B.A., LLB, and other degrees. Additionally, it offers postgraduate programmes like the MBA, MPhil, and MRes.
