The Ball Brothers, industrialists and founders of the Ball Corporation, established Ball State University as a public research university in Muncie, Indiana in 1918. There are two satellite campuses located in Fishers and Indianapolis.
The university, which is categorised as 'R2: Doctoral Universities-High research activity,' encompasses 731 acres and 109 buildings, the majority of which are located in their Old Quad and New Quad quadrangles. Additionally, the university campus contains nearly 8,000 trees of approximately 625 species. The university offers approximately 190 undergraduate majors, 130 minor fields of study, and over 140 master's, doctoral, certificate, and specialist degrees, to the delight of its students.
Teachers College (Est. 1918), College of Sciences and Humanities (Est. 1926), College of Applied Sciences and Technology (Est. 1948), Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning (Est. 1965), Miller College of Business (Est. 1966), College of Communication, Information, and Media (Est. 1966), College of Fine Arts (Est. 1935), and College of Health Professions (Est. 1935). (Est: 2016). Through these eight colleges, the university grants seven associate degrees, 178 bachelor's degrees, 99 master's degrees, two specialist degrees, and seventeen doctorates.
In 2019, Ball State University enrolled a record 22,541 students, including the institution's largest, most academically qualified, and most diverse freshman class in its 101-year history. Students from out-of-state account for approximately 20% of enrollment, while ethnic minorities make up approximately 16%. There are more than 500 international students enrolled at the university.
Ball State University operates numerous residence halls, the majority of which are on campus. The university supports over 400 student clubs and organisations, including over 30 sororities and fraternities. Every year, approximately 2,250 students serve as community volunteers for approximately 175 community partners. The university also features a 200-member Pride of Mid-America Marching Band and a university singer's Glee club. The University of Ball State is affiliated with the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and the Mid-American Conference.
Latin Student Union, Asian American Student Association, Spectrum, and Black Student Association constitute the multicultural organisations at the university. Student Voluntary Services, Residence Hall Association, and Student Government Association are also recognised organisations. The university competes in NCAA Division I (FBS) competition and is a member of the Mid-American Conference (MAC). In addition, it participates in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA).
