Georgia State University was founded in 1913 and is one of the University System of Georgia's four research universities. The university was first known as Georgia Tech Evening School of Commerce, before being renamed the Atlanta Division of the University of Georgia in 1947. It was renamed Georgia State College of Business Administration in 1955. The university was given university status in 1955. The university's name was changed to its current one in 1969. Over the years, the university has grown rapidly. Carnegie Foundation has designated it as an R1 research institute.
Accommodations, such as residence halls and centres, are available on the university campus. The campus has all of the amenities that students require. It also has 14 levels of university lofts, which can accommodate 550 people. The lofts are available to students and their families who wish to live together. Dining areas are available in all residence halls. On campus, students enjoy a calm learning atmosphere. The campus is also adjacent to a number of cafes and restaurants. Additionally, for the convenience of students, stationery stores, department stores, and chemist shops are placed near the school.
At the Atlanta Campus, the University offers over 250 degree programmes in over 100 disciplines of study. It also has over 30 associate degree programmes available on five sites and through the state's largest online programme. The institution now has over 53,000 students from over 170 countries and territories. The Language Research Centre, the Centre for Neuromics, the Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience, the Centre for Advancing Brain Imaging, and the Centre for Diagnostics & Therapeutics, Center for Molecular and Translational Medicine are among the university's research centres.
The Signal, Neo Network, Album 88 Radio, New South, and Underground are among the student media organisations. The institution has over 400 student organisations and provides leadership seminars and organisation advice all year long.
