Golden Gate University (GGU), founded in 1901, focuses on graduate and undergraduate education for adults and professionals in the fields of law, business, psychology, marketing, finance, and human resource management, among others. Many of its courses are also offered as online degree programmes.
It is California's fourth-oldest private university. The university's original name, YMCA Evening College, lasted until 1923, after which it was renamed. Wasc Senior Colleges and Universities Commission, the American Bar Association, the California State Bar, and the American Association of Law Schools have accredited it (AALS). In 1996, it was one of the first universities to implement web-based learning programmes.
Golden Gate University's main campus is located in San Francisco, with two additional campuses in Silicon Valley and Seattle. The campus in San Francisco is centrally located in the city's financial district. There are lounges for students and alumni, service offices, libraries, a computer lab, legal clinics, and centres. It is particularly accessible by public transportation. The Seattle campus, which was founded in 1974, offers evening courses such as Graduate Certificates in Taxation and Master of Science in Taxation, among others. The Silicon Valley campus is a regional learning centre that allows students to attend in-person classes on weeknights and Saturdays to complete their courses. This method permits completion of the Executive MPA and MS Human Resource Management programmes.
Golden Gate University is home to both local and international students from 48 countries, assisting them with visa documentation, housing, etc. The private, non-profit institution has numerous academic and cultural student clubs. These clubs host numerous workshops, events, and conferences to provide unique opportunities for learning, networking, and socialisation. Sixty-one percent of students at Golden Gate University are enrolled in graduate business programmes, twenty percent are law students, and nineteen percent are enrolled in undergraduate programmes. Richard Belluzzo, CEO of Quantum Corp and former President and COO of Microsoft, Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn.org, and J. J. Phillip Burton, a former U.S. congressman, Craig Campbell, the lieutenant governor of Alaska, Peter Corroon, the mayor of Salt Lake County, Utah, and Fiona Ma, the 34th treasurer of California, are notable political figures. John Burris, a trial attorney in Oakland, and Philip M. Pro, a US District Court judge for the District of Nevada, are among the alumni of GGU's law programme.
