Golden Gate University (GGU), founded in 1901, focuses on graduate and undergraduate education for adults and professionals in the fields of law, business, psychology, marketing, finance, and human resource management, among others. Many of its courses are also offered as online degree programmes.

It is California's fourth-oldest private university. The university's original name, YMCA Evening College, lasted until 1923, after which it was renamed. Wasc Senior Colleges and Universities Commission, the American Bar Association, the California State Bar, and the American Association of Law Schools have accredited it (AALS). In 1996, it was one of the first universities to implement web-based learning programmes.

Golden Gate University's main campus is located in San Francisco, with two additional campuses in Silicon Valley and Seattle. The campus in San Francisco is centrally located in the city's financial district. There are lounges for students and alumni, service offices, libraries, a computer lab, legal clinics, and centres. It is particularly accessible by public transportation.
