Harding University began as a junior institution in 1924, when two junior colleges, Arkansas Christian College and Harper College, united to form Harding College. James A. Harding, co-founder and first president of Nashville, was the inspiration for the college's name. He was a Christian education teacher and evangelist.
Harding University is located in the Arkansas town of Searcy. Harding Institution, which is affiliated with the Churches of Christ, is the state's largest private university. Around 4,879 students attend the university, representing 49 states and 55 countries and territories. There are approximately 370 highly competent faculty members, with 255 holding a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. The university's slogan is "Community of Mission."
