Claremont's Harvey Mudd College was founded in 1955. It is a member of the extremely prestigious Claremont Colleges. Harvey Seeley Mudd was one of the first investors in the Cyprus Mines Corporation. He had contributed to the planning of this college but had passed away before its 1955 opening. His family and friends helped fund his college education. Therefore, the college was named after him. Harvey Mudd is affiliated with the prestigious Claremont Colleges. Different names are given to the various dorms at colleges. Mildred E. Mudd Hall (also known as the East Hall), the West Hall, the North Hall, the Marks Residence Hall (also known as the South Hall), J.L. Atwood Residence Hall (also known as the Atwood Hall), the Case Residence Hall (also known as the Case Hall), Ronald and Maxine Linde Residence Hall (also known as the Linde Hall), Frederick and Susan Sontag Residence Hall (also known as the Sontag Hall), and Wayne and Julie Drinkward Residence Hall (also known as the (also known as the Drinkward Hall).
Seven departments comprise the academic structure of Harvey Mudd College. Biology majors include Biology Laboratory, Biostatistics, Comparative Physiology, Ecology and Environmental Biology, Evolutionary Biology, Molecular Biology, and Organic Chemistry. The Computer Science Department offers three undergraduate programmes. They consist of the Computer Science Major, the Mathematical and Computational Biology Major, and the Computer Science and Mathematics Joint Major. Engineering Mathematics, Experimental Engineering, Chemical and Thermal Processes, Materials Engineering, Engineering Clinic, Digital Electronics, Fluid Mechanics, Mass Transfer and Separation Processes, Engineering Electronics, Autonomous Robot Navigation, Dynamics of Elastic Systems, and Applied Elasticity are some of the courses offered by the Department of Engineering. The Humanities, Social Sciences, and Arts Department offers courses in Art, American Studies, Environmental Analysis, Economics, Literature, Media Studies, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Religious Studies, etc. The Department of Physics offers courses such as Astrophysics, Mechanics and Wave Motion, Gravitation, and Quantum Mechanics, among others.
