Lamar University, also known as Lamar or LU, is an open university in the Beaumont region of Texas. In the early 1940s, the institution was separated from the South Park school district and relocated to its current location. In 1932, the university was renamed Mirabeau B. Lamar University in honour of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the Republic of Texas' second president. The university began with 125 students in its initial fall semester and has since grown to become a member of the Texas State University System and one of Texas' fastest growing universities and colleges. Five undergraduate colleges, one graduate college, and an honours college make up the university. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has granted this institution accreditation.
The university's seven colleges provide over 100 programmes of study leading to bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees on its 292-acre campus. The institution also offers online courses to on-campus students in addition to these on-site courses. Online master's and doctorate programmes are available. The university supports an outstanding Honors Program and provides a lot of options for undergraduate research. Additional specialised certifications are available through the university's various programmes.

Modern, apartment-style accommodation halls with a variety of amenities are available on campus. The campus is one of the most contemporary in the area, with access to a hall and a sports centre. There are a variety of activities available outside of the classroom. There are around 100 campus clubs and organisations at the university. Students can represent the university at various levels through these cultural groups, religious clubs, and service organisations.
