Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private research institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts, founded in 1861. The Institute admitted its first student in 1865, four years after its foundation charter was approved, and shortly after that, in 1871, it admitted its first woman student. By combining teaching and research with a major focus on solving real-world problems, MIT established a new type of independent educational institution. MIT has 30 departments spread across five colleges that are pioneering new forms of learning on campus.
With over 1,067 faculty members, MIT continues to play an important role in the lives of undergraduate and graduate students by serving as advisers, mentors, coaches, committee members, and more. A total of 78 distinguished individuals from research, engineering, education, industry, and other fields serve on the Institute's board of trustees. Furthermore, the faculty members maintain a high level of global competency in their fields.
MIT is located between Central and Kendall Squares, across the Charles River from Boston's Back Bay, on a 168-acre campus that includes 26 acres of playing fields, more than 20 gardens and green areas, 18 student homes, and around 50 publicly acknowledged works of art.
Numerous degree-granting programmes, as well as multidisciplinary centres, laboratories, and programmes, are housed within the academic departments and institutes. In the academic year 2019-20, 11,520 students attended MIT, with 458 international undergraduates and 2873 international graduate students hailing from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, four territories, and 129 countries. Entrepreneurs, executives, managers, and technical professionals can enrol in a variety of executive and professional programmes at MIT, which are available both online and on-campus.
