Rutgers University, formerly known as the State University of New Jersey, was founded in 1766 and is the main public research university in the state. It is one of the eighth-oldest higher education institutions in the United States. It was once known as Queen's College before being renamed Rutgers College in 1825 in honour of Colonel Henry Rutgers. After being designated as the State University of New Jersey by the New Jersey Legislature, it was transformed into a research university from a liberal arts institution.
Rutgers University has three campuses distributed across New Jersey, including the New Brunswick campus, which is the Association of American Universities' flagship. It also houses Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences' health and medical care branch. The Camden campus, in southern New Jersey, and the Newark campus, in northern New Jersey, are both leading higher education institutions.
The main campus of the university has 50,254 students, with 36,039 undergraduates and 14,215 professional and graduate students, and the remaining three campuses have 27600 students. Over 9000 international students from over 130 countries are enrolled. There are around 6,000 faculty members spread throughout 29 institutions and colleges. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools has approved the university.
