About State University of New York At New Paltz

SUNY, or State University of New York at New Paltz, was founded in 1828 and granted academy status five years later. New Paltz Classical School was its original name, and it offered writing, arithmetic, reading, Latin, and Greek at the time. The building was renovated and rebuilt in 1884, following which it became a state school that trained teachers for New York state public schools. In 1938, the institute was recognised as a full-fledged college with a four-year programme.

Demonstration of English Proficiency may be demonstrated by providing evidence of meeting one of these criteria: In the event that you cannot demonstrate English Language Proficiency and you are offered admission, you will be required to sit for a placement exam upon arrival at SUNY New Paltz. The exam may include:
  • An official score of 80* on the TOEFL iBT, 85 for MA English, or an 90 if your major is Second Language Education (TESOL). *Computer Science and Engineering applicants must provide a minimum of 74 on the iBT.
  • A test of grammar, reading and listening comprehension,
  • An official score of a 6.5* on the IELTS, or a 7.0 if your major is Second Language Education (TESOL). * Computer Science and Engineering applicants must provide a minimum score of 6.0
  • a writing sample.
  • An official score of 53* on the PTE Academic, 57 for MA English applicants, or 61 for Second Language Education (TESOL) applicants. *Computer Science and Engineering applicants must provide a minimum score of 50 on the PTE.
Based upon your performance on the exam, you may be required to register for additional English language instruction. All students must demonstrate the required level of English proficiency before being allowed to begin graduate coursework.
  • A passing score on a proficiency test upon arrival on campus. (Only given to students who have been offered Conditional Admission.)
