In 1969, the University of Alabama at Birmingham was founded. Alabama's top-ranked public institution is one of the state's three major research institutes. The university was founded in 1936 as an academic extension facility and became an independent institution in 1969. With 116 students, the institute began operations in an ancient mansion in central Birmingham. Since 1970, it has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The UAB Health System was formed as a result of its collaboration with UAHSF. It is presently a well-known academic health centre as well as an internationally renowned research institute.
The university's campus is located in Southside, Birmingham's most cosmopolitan suburb. The college blocks, Recreation Center, UAB Health System, libraries, and housing halls are among the 100 structures that make up the campus. UAB has two libraries, each with a large collection of rare and unique books, pictures, documents, and other materials. Game rooms, aerobics studios, gyms, and other amenities may be found on the Recreation Center's three floors. Blazer Hall, Camp Hall, Blount Hall, Rast Hall, Denman Hall, and New Freshmen Residence Hall are the six residence halls on campus. Students can stay in one of these apartments while on campus.
The institution has a total of 21,923 students, with 8,087 postgraduates and 13,836 undergraduates. There are students from over 110 nations represented among the student body. The university employs about 12,676 people, including 2,882 professors. At UAB, the student-to-faculty ratio is 19:1. Aside from that, UAB is Alabama's largest single-site employer, with over 23,000 employees and an annual economic effect of more than $7.15 billion.

For international students, a number of route programmes, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are offered to enable them qualify for degree-level study in the United States.
Direct Entry Undergraduate
Students who meet the required entry requirements and English language competence levels can apply to UAB directly for admission to undergraduate programmes in a number of areas and disciplines.
Direct Entry Postgraduate
Students who wish to apply for direct admission to a postgraduate programme at UAB must meet the entry requirements and have a sufficient command of the English language.
International Year One
Degree credits can be earned while students improve their intellectual and English skills. Students receive additional assistance in order to graduate at the same time as UAB domestic students. Students can take a customised route programme (up to three semesters) for admittance into their undergraduate degree based on their English language proficiency.
Undergraduate Transfer Program
Those who have finished college or university courses and wish to transfer to UAB can do so through the Undergraduate Transfer Program, which allows them to transfer their degree credits.
Graduate Pathway Program
This programme prepares international students for graduate school by providing them with the intellectual and language skills they require. They will also study for GMAT/GRE exams if the programme requires it. Depending on the students' English language abilities, one or two semester alternatives are available.
Academic English Program
Students can improve their English language, academic, and critical thinking skills in order to succeed in higher education in the United States.
