The University of Idaho is a land-grant, publicly-owned research institution. It was the sole university in the state for 71 years, from 1889 to 1963, after being founded by the regional legislature. In 1892, the institute began instruction with forty students. Today, it is one of the most prestigious educational and research institutions in Idaho. The institution is accredited by APLU to grant doctoral, master's, bachelor's, and specialist degrees. The NCAA Division I affiliation qualifies the University of Idaho Vandals to compete in the Big Sky Conference.

Idaho's Palouse hills are home to the university's main campus, which is located in Moscow. The university campus encompasses academic buildings, a library, parking areas, bike paths, farms, an 18-hole golf course, and arboreta on a total area of 1,585 acres. There are 253 buildings on campus, including the Administration Building, Memorial Gymnasium, Student Recreation Center, and Bruce M. Pitman Center. Centrally located on campus, the Idaho Commons houses the study area, food court, Einstein's Bagels and coffee shop, copy centre, convenience store, and credit union. The university's multipurpose Kibbie Dome is the site for tennis, basketball, football, and indoor tracks.

The university library is the largest library in the state, with more than 2 million holdings. There are four residence halls, eighteen fraternities, and ten sororities on campus that provide on-campus housing for students, primarily freshmen. On-campus apartments are restricted to married couples, families, graduates, law students, and nontraditional students. UI also has branch campuses in Boise, Idaho Falls, Coeur d'Alene, and Twin Falls, as well as extension facilities throughout Idaho.

Two of the university's colleges are dedicated solely to law and graduate studies. More than 300 degrees are available for undergraduate and graduate students. International students constitute 4% of the university's total enrollment of 10,791 students enrolled in various programmes. Approximately 9,328 students are enrolled at the Moscow campus. The ratio of students to faculty at UI is 16 to 1. In addition, the university has numerous clubs where students can participate in extracurricular activities such as dance, drama, opera, and soccer.
