The University of South Carolina (abbreviated as USC) is a public research-focused university in Columbia that was founded in 1801. The college, originally known as South Carolina College, began providing instruction in 1805. The university had only one structure (now known as Rutledge College) at the time, which included the administration office, instructional areas, a residence hall, and a chapel. The General Assembly granted it university status and gave it its current name in 1865. USC's 19 varsity teams compete as Gamecocks in the South-eastern Conference, which is affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
USC's 359-acre main campus in downtown Columbia is home to cutting-edge academic and administrative buildings, athletic facilities, university dormitories, dining venues, parking lots, green spaces, and paths. Aside from that, USC has seven satellite campuses spread across the state: Lancaster, Salkehatchie, Sumter, Union, Aiken, Beaufort, and Upstate. To enable better study and research, each of the campuses has exceptional academic facilities such as contemporary classrooms, high-tech laboratories, and lecture halls. The main source of information for studying, teaching, and research is the university libraries. Both students and faculty have access to all printed and digital resources. Aside from that, the university offers free Wi-Fi and transportation to its students. The 'Daily Gamecock,' a student-run newspaper, was established in 1908 and is published throughout the spring semesters.
USC includes nine colleges and six schools that offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional degrees as well as a variety of professional courses. Students can study arts, sciences, business, medicine, engineering, computing, law, nursing, music, information and communication technology, pharmacy, public health, social work, sports management, hospitality, and education. Environmental and sustainability research, energy research, advanced materials research, and health sciences research are all supported by the institution. Currently, the university has 52,633 students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. There are 35,364 students enrolled on the Columbia campus alone, with 25,237 undergraduates and 8,487 postgraduates. The institution employs approximately 2,325 faculty personnel, with 1,662 on the main campus.
