The University of Wisconsin-Madison is an open research university that was founded in 1848 and is Wisconsin's largest and oldest university. It was also the first university to join the University of Washington System. In addition, the university works with the AAU, BTAA, APLU, WUN, and the URA. It had only seventeen students in its inaugural classes. It now has 45,317 students enrolled. In addition, the university is known for its arboretum, which is located on campus. It is a research and teaching centre as well as a historic ecological restoration site. The facility, which covers 120 acres of land, was founded in 1932. Wisconsin University is regarded as one of the AAU's founding institutions.
The campus is located on the Isthmus Lake shore. This is the main campus, which covers a total of 936 acres. Arthur Peabody and JTW Jennings designed and built the structure. The campus was named one of the most attractive university campuses in the US in 2012. Bascom Hall, Van Hise Hall, Grainger Hall, Music Hall, Humanities building, Dejope Hall, and Wisconsin Union Hall are just a few of the significant structures and halls on campus. WSUM 91.7 FM, the university's radio station, is also located on campus.
The university provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorate degree programmes. These programmes provide a number of courses covering a wide range of topics. The study programme lasts four years and is affiliated with roughly thirteen schools and colleges. Engineering, agriculture, education, business, media, law, and medical studies are among the major subjects covered by the degree programmes. According to a report published in 2019, 31,185 undergraduate students enrolled in the programme. In addition, the institution has around 100 research centres and courses in agriculture, the arts, and engineering. Wisconsin is now ranked third among the state's top institutions, after being named one of the greatest research universities.
