Virginia Commonwealth University, founded in 1838, is an open research university affiliated with ORAU, SURA, CUMU, APLU, Urban 13, and GCU. In 1854, the university opened its medical department. In 1893, the university established the college of medicine and the college of physicians and surgeons. Due to the increasing number of students, the university expanded its faculties and campuses over time. The university's first Arts and Humanities classes began with 1200 undergraduate students. The School of Arts has become the nation's largest professional programme.
The Monroe Park Campus and the MCV Campus are VCU's two main campuses. VCU's Monroe campus was formerly known as the Academic Campus. It consists of approximately 40 buildings with a mixture of modern and vintage architecture. The campus was constructed in 1900. The Medical Centre of the university, including the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing, are located on the MCV Campus. Additionally, the Massey Cancer Centre is located on campus. Both campuses are surrounded by vegetation and offer students a tranquil learning environment.
The university offers programmes at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels. The university's academic structure is comprised of a variety of subjects and courses organised into a number of departments. The School of Business, the School of Allied Health Sciences, the School of Dentistry, the School of Engineering, and the School of Medicine are well-known departments. In addition, the university library is recognised as one of the largest research libraries in Virginia. It has approximately three million books, including scholarly journals and renowned novels.
