Biomedical Engineering (beng) in Cork Institute of Technology
Course summary
Biomedical Engineering combines engineering with an appreciation of the functioning of the human body, whether healthy, injured or diseased. In the clinical context, biomedical engineers play a key role in designing, sourcing and maintaining equipment, facilities and services within hospitals. Products include prosthetic devices to provide the disabled with tools to improve their quality of life, disposable plastic and wound care products, and precision metal implants including pacemakers, microelectronic devices, orthopaedic implants, diagnostics, contact lenses and stents.
Career
Graduates will be qualified to work as biomedical engineering technologists within the healthcare, medical device industries, in research and development facilities, and also in clinical/hospital environments. The types of product include:
- New prosthetic devices to provide the disabled with tools to improve their quality of life
- Disposable medical devices such as needles, and implant drug delivery systems
- Non-invasive diagnostic imaging procedures
- Laser and micro-surgical techniques
- Computer assisted surgery
- Joint replacement
- ‘Spare parts’ surgery to provide cardiac assist devices, such as artificial heart valves and blood vessels.
Graduates will find opportunities at technician engineer level in:
- Commissioning and maintenance of medical equipment
- Planning and operation of automated biomedical manufacturing systems
- Implementation, operation and maintenance of clean room technology
- Research & Development
- Computer Aided Design
- Validation/Verification
