This new degree offers students a unique opportunity to develop both software and electronic engineering skills.

Electronic engineering includes hardware technology, software technology, and the integration of both, in application areas including:

The programme emphasises the application of scientific, mathematical, social and economic principles to real world engineering problems.

Software engineering is a major stream within this programme, including design methodologies, test methodologies, using industry standard tools, and programming in a number of programming languages.

A major area of opportunities for graduates, is as software engineers, in the field of electronic engineering, in the ICT industry.

Students on this course will develop advanced skills in:

There is a strong emphasis on lab based skills, with students spending over 50% of their time on projects, labs and practical applications.

The course also includes a valuable eight-month Work Placement in Year 3. Alternatively, students can avail of an Erasmus+ study placement in a partner college in Europe.

Employment potential for graduates is excellent - there is a high demand for graduates with ICT/software/electronic engineering skills.  Graduates have gained employment with companies such as HP, CISCO, Avaya, Ericsson, Analog Devices, Intel and SAP.

‘EGFSN (Expert Group on Future Skills Needs) research indicates a current demand for high-level ICT skills at an average 8,000 new job openings per annum. Of these, it was estimated by the EGFSN that 85% of the job openings would be for high-level ICT professionals at NFQ Level 8 +.'

Essential Information: 

This course includes an eight-month work placement in Year 3, from January to August. This provides students with valuable work experience and provides access to potential employment opportunities. Many students will be expected to obtain full-time jobs at companies where they have been placed.

Students will be liable for an additional materials fee of €100 per year for certain full time programmes. This fee is not covered by Granting Authorities.
