Bachelor Of Science (honours) In Dental Technology in University of Malta

This three-year undergraduate course, inclusive of the summer period, provides students with an introductory knowledge to the theory and scientific foundation of dental technology. It prepares the students with the necessary skills in laboratory practice within the professional environment of the teaching laboratory in a structured manner as follows: 

1st Year

Students will receive knowledge on basic dental technology skills with reference to the construction of removable prostheses. The health and safety aspects regarding laboratory procedures are also included as an important part of the studies. In parallel students will also learn to perform dental laboratory technology skills and observe patients whilst working in a dental clinical setting. 

2nd Year

The students will further their studies in removable prostheses including the construction of cast partial frameworks and orthodontic appliances. Management skills are taught in preparation for the future running of a dental laboratory.

3rd Year

In the final year of the course the students are exposed to the theory and technical practice of fixed prosthodontics. They will also be guided towards carrying out a research project to be presented by the end of the course.

The course will provide sufficient knowledge to enable dental technologists to undertake work prescriptions from the dental clinic and carry out the necessary work with responsibility.

Admission and progression requirements

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics. 

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements

A pass at Grade C in Chemistry at Intermediate Level or a pass at Advanced Level in Chemistry. 

Applicants in possession of a pass with Merit or better in the Diploma in Dental Surgery Assistance shall be considered as having satisfied both the general and special entry requirements.

Prior to enrolling for the Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment as detailed in the Occupational Health Protocol approved by the Faculty Board, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement shall be barred from attending the clinical placements indicated in the programme of studies. 

The Admissions Board, acting on the advice of the Board, may admit applicants in possession of a Diploma in Health Science in the area of Dental Technology awarded by the University of Malta into the second year of the Course in the same area of study, in terms of regulation 8.1 of the Admission Regulations of the University.

Prospective applicants who are eligible and short-listed will be called for an interview to be held in September 2019. 

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2019.
