Why International Business Management?
This is a three-year degree, or two-year diploma, designed to prepare you for general management. All our business programmes at Canterbury are essentially practical in nature. You will receive relevant knowledge and understanding of organisations, the external environment in which they operate and how they are managed. The inter-relationships among and the integration of these areas will form part of your overall student learning experience.
Assessments include a range of methods but do not feature formal examinations. A particularly innovative feature is the link with local organisations in the final stage of the degree provided by the Problem Orientated Project module. This is also available if you choose Business Management (Retail). You can also expect to gain a comprehensive understanding of the nature of business ethics and demonstrate the relevance of ethics in business.
We provide a high-quality, broad-based and sound foundation for those wanting to pursue roles in business and/or management in a positive learning environment. We pride ourselves on approachability and ensure our students have access to their tutors within drop-in sessions and office hours.
Who is this course for?
This course is for you if you are looking for a role in the service, retail and public sectors. This programme allows you to develop an understanding of these areas without following a degree devoted entirely to the subject.
You will be provided with the opportunity to develop broad knowledge and understanding of a range of current models, theories, concepts, research and issues. These relate to key aspects of small and medium-sized enterprises, voluntary and community organisations and large organisations, in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors within the dynamic context and changing environment in which they operate.
What will i study?
We are proud that our students have been finalists a number of times in the national IBM Business Challenge.
The first year is common to all business programmes and introduces you to some of the main themes of the programme. There is also a module designed to make sure you are familiar with the skills, techniques and computer software you will be using both at university and beyond. At the end of the first year, it is quite straightforward to change degree pathways should you wish.
In year two the exact combination of core and optional modules depends on your chosen degree. The final year involves studying business aspects from a more strategic viewpoint. You will also have the opportunity to examine a real-life organisational problem. A wide range of local, regional and national organisations from across the region support us in doing this.
Our graduates have moved on to very exciting and challenging jobs in the private as well as public sector, in the UK and abroad. Their employers include Google, Apple, KPMG, HSBC and the NHS.
We are a diverse school; our students and staff come from a variety of backgrounds and places. In order to provide our students with a diversity of learning experiences, we maintain close links with a variety of European universities. Our students have the opportunity to complete one semester or one year of their studies at one of these institutions in English language within the framework of the Erasmus programme.
Work experience
You can opt to do a one year-long work placement, in addition to your three year academic studies. Whilst it is the responsibility of the student to secure a placement there is a School based placement officer and Unitemps office to help.
