Product Design Engineering in Canterbury Christ Church University

Innovative new products and improvements to existing products happen continuously. Are you keen to design and improve the usability and sustainability of everyday products such as mobile phones and household appliances to meet the needs of the elderly, or redesign items so they are easier to recycle? If so, choose product design engineering. You will learn to solve complex problems, research, develop and prototype your ideas into reality to produce engineered working solutions that can be manufactured. You will also work with product designers to make the solution look great! As well as bringing aesthetics into a solution, product design engineers can improve the performance and efficiency of existing products.

Why Study Product Design Engineering?

Product Design Engineers are key to transforming an engineering solution into a solution that can be manufactured and work. They also work with BA Product Designers to make the practical solution beautiful and appealing to potential users.

Not only do Product Design Engineers bring human factors and aesthetics into a solution, but they can improve the performance and efficiency of existing products too and reduce the cost of manufacture. After your degree you will use your inter-professional communication skills alongside your knowledge of the qualities of materials and methods of construction and manufacturing to create products that a company can sell and make a profit.

You could work in a wide range of industries. From electronics to synthetic textiles or health to disaster recovery. For example, you might work on many products and parts for mass manufacture from innovations in hockey sticks to new domestic appliances, or from transport solutions to simpler, more effective water purifiers for developing countries.

What will i study?

The three-year BEng will unlock your full potential as a creative problem solver. Our hands-on, practical problem solving approach makes up 40-60% of each year of study so you can be a confident, work-ready engineer by the time you graduate. On completion of the BEng, you will be on track to become an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

The four-year MEng course will advance your engineering talent even further and develop your leadership and management skills. On completion of the MEng you will be on track to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng).

We are one of only a handful of universities in the UK to offer the CDIO international engineering education model, developed by MIT, which allows you to learn in a practical, hands-on way to find solutions to industry related engineering challenges.

This course equips you to be a practising professional graduate product design engineer. Product Design Engineering is a key area for growth in south-east England which presents exciting opportunities for graduates. You will be able to apply and develop technology to provide Product Design solutions for industry.

The advent of Industry 4.0 technology has enabled engineering designers to creatively design and rapidly prototype bespoke products or test products for mass manufacture, shortening the time from initial concept to a market ready product.
