Course Overview

The MSc Dietetics degree is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and is accredited by the British Dietetic Association. It enables graduates with a PG Diploma in Dietetics who are registered with the HCPC to complete a 60 credit dissertation module.

Students exiting with the Postgraduate Diploma can return to undertake the dissertation within 5 years of starting the PG Diploma.  The MSc Dietetics is undertaken in one academic year.  Most students undertake the MSc Dietetics while working within the NHS.

​Course Content​​

During the programme students undertake a research project. This is usually undertaken within their work environment within the NHS.  Many students undertake Service Improvement Projects within their Dietetic Departments.

MSc Dietetics: 

The dissertation consists of four elements.  There is a protocol, extended literature review, journal paper and reflective statement.

Year One: 

September – Induction

October – Protocol Submission

November – Feedback on Protocol Meeting

February – Extended Literature Review Submission

Late February – Feedback on Literature Review

May – Journal Paper and Reflective Statement Submission

June – Exam Board

Exit with MSc at Exam Board in June. 

Learning & Teaching​

It is expected that students undertake independent reading and self-study; this is aided by the use of Moodle, the Virtual Learning Environment in use at the University. All students have previously undertaken a Research Studies Module which is available as a resource.

All students are allocated a personal tutor who offers pastoral support and guides the student through the dissertation process.

Employability & Careers​

Dietitians normally begin their career in the National Health Service where they progress to the main clinical grades. The opportunity exists for specialisation in various aspects of dietetics by means of post-registration education. In addition there are opportunities for dietitians to be involved in health education/promotion, education, research and journalism.
