Civil Engineering (technical Route) Msc in Coventry University
Become the best you can be in the construction industry with an accredited Master’s in Civil Engineering from Coventry University.
Accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators as approved ‘further learning’ for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, our Civil Engineering courses provide topical and industry-focused postgraduate education to enhance career opportunities in civil engineering.
For holders of a CEng accredited Bachelor’s degree, successful completion of the MSc Civil Engineering automatically meets the educational base for Chartered Engineer status. A slightly modified version of this course – the ‘Technical Route’ – is available for holders of Institute of Engineering (IEng) accredited degrees, who upon successful completion will need to apply for an academic assessment to be formally approved for CEng. They may be required to complete extra modules if their Bachelor degree is deemed to be not technical enough.
Coventry offers cutting-edge facilities in our High Performance Engineering Centre, including construction site management simulation. We have excellent industry links and the course is developed and delivered by academic lecturers and guest speakers in collaboration with civil engineering employers, such as Underground Professional Services and Morgan Sindall.

Course information
The course is designed to develop high-level knowledge and wide-ranging understanding of the planning, design, construction and operation of civil engineering works, exploring the traditional and innovative practices behind iconic constructions such as Wembley stadium.
From concept to construction, we will cover the technical skills required to analyse, design and develop sound solutions to civil engineering projects. Using case studies, practical sessions, simulation labs and site visits to live projects, you will apply engineering principles and use computer modelling techniques to analyse complex engineering systems, gaining valuable experience of the work you will carry out in an industrial context. Past projects have included the Severn Trent building and the Coventry A45/A46 by-pass.
You will be taught the latest laboratory testing procedures and modern techniques used to assess material and structural performance, such as lightweight concrete and heavy structural steel beam testing techniques using modern and upgraded loading equipment automated with data loggers, saturated and unsaturated stress path soil testing apparatus and commercial civil engineering materials mixing and synthesising equipment.
We will study the economics behind construction, examining the regulatory and legal framework within which the industry operates, health and safety in the construction workplace, as well as corporate management processes in the construction industry, such as procurement systems and standard forms of construction contracts.
Career prospects
The civil engineering sector is one of the largest employers in the UK and demand is strong for civil engineering graduates.
