The aim of this course is to give you knowledge of animal science and how this can be applied in evidence-based management of animals under human care. This course will blend theoretical knowledge with a range of practical and laboratory-based skills. You will cover physiology, nutrition, genetics, animal behaviour, animal welfare, animal husbandry and management. In addition, the course will provide you with a global understanding of societies’ interactions with animals and an introduction to business management of relevance to working within animal-related industries.?
This course will offer you the opportunity to tailor your learning experience to suit your own interests through the choice of one of our four specialised themes:
- Farmed animal science – focusing on the biological disciplines of farmed animals from the molecular to the whole animal level to optimise health, welfare, productivity and management.
- Small animal science – focusing on the application of scientific knowledge that underpins industry services to ensure high-quality health, welfare and management of small animal species (from traditional pets to the more exotic) in a range of roles (in the home, animals in sport, assistance animals etc.).
- Zoo animal science – focusing on the science of zoo animal management, including an understanding of zoo operations and management and welfare of exotic species housed in zoological collections (including traditional zoos, aquariums and safari parks) around the world.
- Equine science – focusing on the science behind the biology, behaviour and welfare needs of horses and exploring management practices used and businesses that are part of the equine industry both nationally and internationally.
As with other Harper Adams University degrees, a key feature of this course is a placement year where you will get an opportunity to work in industry, enabling you to put knowledge into practice, develop your network and discover your future ambitions. In your final year, you will build on this experience and conduct a specialist research project.
