Overview

Current number of academic staff: Currently Engineering has approximately 25 academic staff. However Engineering is a rapidly growing department, growing in both staff numbers and research areas and we anticipate reaching 50 staff within a few years.

Current number of research staff and students: 20 research associates/fellows, approximately 100 MPhil/PhD students across all of our research areas and numerous internationally recognised visiting academics.

Research income: Currently, the Department attracts approximately £7m in research funding.

Recent publications: All academics in the Department publish regularly in high quality journals, for example IEEE Transactions and ASME Transactions.

Partner organisations: We have strong links with industry, government and other academic institutions.

Description

Our staff are nationally and internationally renowned in a variety of areas of Telecommunications. We provide opportunities for Telecommunications research with a particular emphasis on mobile and personal communication techniques and networks. 

The Centre for Telecommunication research was initially concerned with architectures and protocols for wireless ATM networks, but quickly evolved towards work on protocols, mechanisms, architectures, and applications for IP-based broadband radio access networks.

The mission of the Centre for Telecommunications Research (CTR) is to be a global leader in telecommunications and data and information processing. It is at the forefront of research and innovation in 5G, wired and converged networks, the next-generation fully-immersive Internet of Skills, artificial intelligence applied to and taking data from networks, signal processing and data science, advanced RF and audio technologies, as well as economical and policy implications of these technologies. The Centre strives for societal impact and strong industry outreach which is underpinned by engagement with various verticals, such as health, arts, finance and transport.
