Course Details

If English is not your first language, this international foundation year will give you the necessary English language ability and subject-specific knowledge to study an undergraduate degree within UK higher education.

You will gain an understanding of British culture and universities, and you will work on your intercultural communication, maths, research and study skills. You will also become more aware of the requirements of studying at a UK university, helping you to be more successful and confident on your chosen undergraduate degree.

You might study some parts of the course with British students, while other sessions will be with fellow international students. The teaching on this course is British Council accredited.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Class time: In Semester one, there will be 14.1 taught hours per week. In addition, in some weeks there will be personal tutorials, drop-in sessions, during which you can speak to tutors on an informal basis, and guest lectures, as well as15 hours per week of self-study.

In Semester two, there will be a minimum of 10 taught hours per week depending on your subject route. In addition, there will be some weeks with personal tutorials and drop-in sessions.

Please note: Your class timetable will be provided at induction. All classes take place during the working week from Monday to Friday, at any time between 09:00 and 18:00. There will be no classes on national holidays (Monday 6 May, Monday 27 May and Monday 26 August 2019. For the 2019-2020 academic year, there will be no classes on Friday 8 May and Monday 25 May 2020).

Class size: Maximum 23 students, except in the Researching Contemporary Britain lectures and some subject module classes, which will be determined in the pathway Schools.

Teaching Materials: All materials will be provided with the exception of the English Skills and Maths course book, which you will need to purchase at the maximum cost of £30. Many of the materials are available for loan free-of-charge from the University Library. 

The minimum age upon entry to this course is 17. Please note that our English language courses are adult courses. The university does not act `in loco parentis' and cannot provide 24-hour supervision of 17-year-olds. A signed Parental Consent form for students under the age of 18 is required prior to enrolment.

You will be assessed by a mixture of coursework and classroom tests in reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will also be given access to online self-study resources and matched with a personal tutor who will offer you guidance throughout the course.

After completing this course, your communication and presentation skills, time management, problem solving, and organisation and planning skills will all increase. Your intercultural awareness and self-confidence will benefit and you will be able to show greater initiative in all that you do. All of these skills will prepare you for your next programme of study and the workplace when you graduate.

This course welcomes a range of guest speakers. They will provide unique and insightful views and opinions on how best to settle into the UK and how to achieve the most from your time at university. When studying at Leeds Beckett University, you will be able to volunteer for a range of opportunities, both here and abroad.

The English modules on this course are accredited by the British Council and taught by highly qualified and experienced teachers. We are also an approved Cambridge Delta centre.
