The international tourism industry is booming. It is constantly expanding to cater for the needs of the traveller and their desire to go further more frequently and sustainably. This dynamic course will keep you up to date with emerging trends and global issues, providing you with the experience and skills required to enter the industry at a professional level.
By gaining an appreciation of other cultures you will be both aware and sensitive to the positive and negative impacts of tourism on communities and local economic development. Looking at the modern challenges faced by tourism organisations, this course focuses on recent trends and developments so you are equipped with the skills to solve complex problems and implement plans and solutions to resolve them.
You will acquire an understanding of sustainable tourism and development as well as the organisational structure and management of this ever-expanding service sector. Combined with a strong international focus, you will understand the core areas of business and management of the tourism sector with the ability to contribute at a regional, national and global level.
You will gain a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of international tourism and you will develop an entrepreneurial approach by working alongside key industry partners to develop innovative solutions to real-life business challenges. You will also gain an insight into moral, ethical, environmental and legal issues allowing you to make a valuable contribution to the tourism and travel sector.
With our flexible study options, you can specialise in a specific area leading to your career of choice. This could be sustainable tourism for less developed countries, destination management, marketing and promotion, tourist attractions management or other special interest areas.
If you have studied for an HND or foundation degree, we also offer this course as a top-up. If you select this option, you will study the year three modules listed below.
This course offers the opportunity to take a ‘sandwich’ year – a year of paid employment in industry which will build your skills and experience. This is usually taken between the second and third year of your degree, typically making your course four years in total. Students who choose the sandwich route find it helps with both their studies and getting a job after graduation. It can build your confidence, contacts, and of course your CV. Leeds Beckett advertise lots of placement opportunities and provide support in helping you find the right placement for you. Previous placement students have worked for major attractions and international tour operators including Disney World and TUI.
RESIDENTIALS
During your first year you will have the opportunity to take part in a residential experience. This will be a chance to meet new friends and take part in a number of challenges to develop your problem solving and team working skills. Activities can include rock climbing, gorge scrambling, mountaineering, walking, canoeing and kayaking.
Course Benefits
Our local and international field trips will take learning outside of the classroom so you can experience tourism first-hand. With an optional work placement and the chance to study abroad for a semester, you can gain the skills and expertise that are in demand by travel and tourism employers. You will also have the opportunity to specialise in key areas such as marketing and human resources and learn from our own world-leading experts in responsible tourism. If you choose to study our sandwich course then you'll get to do a year's work experience, either at home or abroad.
You will have the fantastic opportunity of working in teams as a consultant for a luxury online tour operator, where you will develop new and exciting holidays and present them in a Dragon's Den style presentation. If the tour operator likes the ideas, you may get the chance to see it launched into the market.
Through our extensive industry contacts some of our students have worked for Thomas Cook, Jet 2 or in The Gambia on sustainable tourism and development projects. Regular lectures from leading industry speakers, such as Thomas Cook and the Institute of Travel & Tourism, will keep you up to speed with current hot topics and developments within this exciting industry.
