Legal Practice Course | LLM in Leeds Beckett University, UK

Legal Practice Course | LLM in Leeds Beckett University

Course Details

This is the full LPC masters course and forms part of the vocational stage of training required if you wish to qualify as a solicitor. The Solicitors Regulation Authority recognises this course as meeting its training requirements and covering the necessary legal topics.

The course will be delivered via interactive workshops based on realistic case studies that explore the challenges of professional practice. You will learn from a team of academic staff who are qualified lawyers with significant professional experience. They will provide practical support as you refine your skills, and their wide-ranging experience allied to a varied choice of option modules will enable you to tailor your qualification to particular areas of interest.

Your Independent Legal Research Project will see you complete an extended written dissertation on a subject of your choice with support from your tutors.

Alternatively, you could choose to study for a postgraduate diploma in legal practice. You can find further details on our PG Dip Legal Practice page.

Please note that this course requires attendance of four days 9:30 – 16:30 in the first week’s introductory course for both full-time and part-time students. These days will include sessions on employability skills, a mini assessment centre assessed by Leeds practitioners, and a networking event.

Changes to legal education and training
Legal education and training is currently under detailed review by professional regulators in the legal sector. The review will examine the routes currently open and the qualifications required to become a solicitor or barrister, and includes a reflection on changes to and removal of existing routes, as well as the possibility of establishing new ones.

Currently, students can complete a qualifying law degree, the Graduate Diploma Law (GDL) and then the Legal Practice Course (LPC) to qualify as a solicitor or Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) to become a barrister; this will remain unchanged until August 2020 for solicitors and August 2019 for barristers.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) have issued a common protocol for guidance. This can be found by visiting the SRA website
