This programme will give you the necessary background knowledge needed for progression on to a variety of science-based degrees at UCLan.  Studying modules in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics and Skills for Science, the foundation year will give you the essential knowledge and understanding to facilitate your study at degree level.

The foundation entry year will provide you with an interesting and stimulating grounding in science and enable you to gain key practical skills in our modern, spacious and well-equipped laboratory facilities.  It will support and encourage you to develop your critical thinking and give you the confidence to apply your knowledge and understanding as you progress to your undergraduate degree.

Once you have been accepted on to the foundation course, you do not need to make an additional application in order to progress on to your chosen degree programme in the Faculty of Science & Technology (although entry requirements apply for degrees in the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Science).

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

There will be a variety of assessments across all subjects, including an oral presentation, laboratory reports, multiple-choice tests, a poster presentation, examinations etc.

The aims of the Foundation Entry Degree in Applied Science are:

  • To provide students with an interesting and stimulating grounding in science and enable students to possess the necessary skills to support study at university.
  • To provide a foundation in the essential knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical science skills to facilitate study at degree level at university.
  • To support and encourage students to appropriately apply a range of basic scientific concepts and techniques and to build the necessary skill set to enable students to become university learners.
  • To develop in students a range of skills to support information gathering at degree level and the ability to present information in an appropriate format.
  • To encourage students to develop systematic and critical thinking skills necessary for university level study.
  • To build self-confidence through self-assessment and reflective practices and allow students to develop and build on their employability skills.
  • To give students the confidence and competence to apply a range of skills to subject related topics that will underpin their development towards university level study.

The course aims to give you the skills and knowledge to progress onto one of a range of science courses at the University.
