The BA (Hons) International Tourism Management degree focuses on employability and develops a responsive business approach to the international travel and tourism industry. The course encourages you to acquire a constructive and critical understanding of the global tourism industry and the wider socio-cultural, political, economic and environmental contexts in which it is placed. There is also the opportunity for local, national and international field visits, for example Barcelona, New York, Cyprus and Cambodia.

The skills nature of managerial competence within the tourism sector will feature in all years of the programme.

During the first year, you will be introduced to university learning environments and the skills required for higher education study and research. Alongside this, you will also be introduced to the subject of tourism as a social science, as well as introducing key business management related topics. Key themes in the first year provide a foundation upon which the second year of the programme can develop.

Theoretical issues will be developed with increasing complexity as students move from the foundation themes in Year 1 through to the contextualisation and the critical and reflective final year. Students will need to come to their timetabled sessions fully prepared to take an active role in their own learning to maximise both enjoyment and understanding.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

Students will, on average, attend eleven hours of lectures, seminars, tutorials, discussion sessions and practical activities each week. Personal study also forms an integral part of the course.

Students can expect a predominance of coursework assignments including essays, reports and presentations with some modules also including examinations or multiple-choice tests. There will be live case-studies, field studies and fieldwork, access to relevant applied information technology systems, self-appraisal and reflect on practice. Team working skills are developed through group assessments.

Merlin Entertainments - Europe’s leading name in location-based family entertainment - has partnered with UCLan to deliver a brand new Tourism in Action module. As part of the  module, students met with Sarah Lundy, the Marketing Manager of the Merlin Group, who provided them with insight into the company, her current job role and her personal experience of breaking into tourism management, as well as an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour at five major Merlin attractions including Sealife, Tower Dungeon, Madame Tussauds, Tower Ballroom and the Blackpool Tower 4D experience. Due to this relationship, students could potentially progress onto the company’s 18-month fast-track graduate programme, training to be one of the future leaders of a global business.

Research-informed teaching is prevalent within the areas of sustainable tourism development, transport and tourism, tourist experiences, crisis management, service quality, and dark tourism. The Division also hosts the Institute of Transport and Tourism as well as The Dark Tourism Forum.

The programme allows for a great deal of flexibility in career choices, leaving students well placed for career opportunities throughout the international marketplace such as working for airlines and airports, managing theme parks and tourist attractions, managing heritage sites, tourist information centre managers, cruise operations, market research management and consultancy, tour operators, tourism development officers or hospitality graduate schemes.
