DBS CHECKS

This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.

It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

The intention of this course is to produce a midwife who is woman centred and passionate about midwifery practice. Therefore, we have designed a course that ensures learning; skill development and care delivery are focused on the promotion of health and wellbeing sensitive to the socio-cultural context of all individuals concerned. A case based approach to teaching and learning is used with an emphasis on pregnancy, birth and health being on a continuum, rather than the traditional way of identifying the woman as low or high risk. The case based learning approach provides opportunities for a wide range of learning and teaching strategies with the majority being student led. Therefore, the students on this course of study are very much active participants and equal partners in their learning and we aim to ensure learning, is relevant, fun and meaningful with each individual having a unique contribution to make to the learning experience.

The course is 85 programmed weeks inclusive of annual leave, this meets the NMC requirement for a minimum of 50% clinical practice and 40% theory. Learning occurs in blocks of theory and clinical practice which are normally approximately 6 weeks long.

Our student selection process is underpinned by the National Values Based Recruitment strategy The selection process has to provide evidence that the future students would aspire to a high standard of excellence in professionalism which is consistent with the NHS values i.e : working together for patients, respect and dignity, commitment to quality of care, compassion, improving lives and everyone counts.

EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES

You will have the opportunity to join the UCLan Midwifery Society and Passionate Midwifery Forum. The course also offers an opportunity for an elective placement, this can include Kenya and Uganda as well as other locations worldwide.

Your midwifery qualifications and experience will open up a wide range of options to develop your career in the directions that interest you most. As your knowledge and expertise increase, you could move into more senior practitioner roles, become a team or unit manager or move into other professions, including neonatal nursing or health visiting. Registration with the NMC as a registered Midwife will allow you to work independently as a private practitioner. UK trained Midwives hold an international recognised and respected qualification and the profession is much sort after the world over.

We offer many progression routes for graduates including various Masters programmes and research opportunities.
