Delivered by industry professionals, including visiting directors and musical directors, this unique and mainly vocational course equips students with fundamental performance and creative skills, ensuring a solid foundation for a range of careers within Music Theatre and the Performing Arts.

The programme includes Musical Theatre and New Music Theatre strands, ensuring an holistic training and diverse performing experience, supported with academic rigour. Students take part in a full-scale musical theatre production in each year, and a major devising project in 2nd and 3rd year.

BA (Hons) Music Theatre is a much sought-after course with a highly regarded reputation from former students and professionals within the industry. It's the perfect course for creative students and will give the opportunity to participate in all aspects of music theatre performance. It's practice-based and offers you the chance to engage in music theatre practice through a combination of skills development, performing and devising work and investigation and research.

You’ll be able to work on projects with the community as part of your course work and also put on performances in public venues. You could also get the opportunity to perform overseas - previous students have performed in France and Shanghai.

Voice and acting are two significant areas within the course which considers these performance activities as inextricably linked. The voice modules concentrate on singing and the spoken word through focusing on the use of text in performance. The acting modules focus on physical awareness applied to the performance space as well as acting techniques. Other modules offer opportunities in music composition and contextual study. Although the course is made up of separate modules there is an integrated and holistic approach to their delivery.

The course provides you with the opportunity to perform in the production of existing works and as well as the creation and realisation of new work. You will participate in one major production in each year with an opportunity to create a major devised piece in both the second and third year.

OPPORTUNITIES

Each year the course takes a Graduate Showcase to an invited audience of industry professionals at a London venue. Venues have included the Soho Theatre and the Jermyn Street Theatre.

The University Chamber Choir is made up of Music Theatre students. The choir has a successful record of winning national competitions, including the Adult Category of Choir of the Year. The choir has an annual concert tour in France, and has also visited Shanghai.

Graduates from this course move into a variety of performance-related jobs including: musical theatre (West End, touring, regional and overseas), television, film, children’s theatre and TV, cruise ship entertainment, teaching, theatre in education, theatre representation and management, high profile singing engagements, voice-over work and many others.

Each year several graduates secure places on MA Musical Theatre and MA Acting courses. Recent graduates have gone to courses at all the major drama schools and conservatoires in the UK. Many of our graduates have secured prestigious bursaries and scholarships to support their post-graduate training, including the Ian Fleming Musical Theatre Award, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Scholarship, BBC Performing Arts Award, John Thaw Foundation Trust Award, Leverhulme Trust Bursary as well as some institution’s own bursaries.

Other graduates have gone to prestigious post-graduate courses in Music, Music Theatre Composition, Physical Theatre, Community Theatre, as well as PGCE teacher training. There are also opportunities for graduates to remain at UCLan to continue their studies at masters and doctoral level.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

The course is based in The Media Factory which is the hub of the performance courses at UCLan. The Media Factory has specialist theatre studios, dance studios and rehearsal spaces. In addition we work in the main theatre situated in St Peter’s Arts Centre.

The learning experience is almost entirely practical. Students learn through doing. It follows that the majority of assessment is of performances and other practical work.

Rehearsals and performances take place in specialist spaces with excellent facilities in terms of lighting and sound. Professional technicians support performances, and professional musicians are engaged to support productions.

The course team all have relevant experience as music theatre industry professionals. In addition professional directors, musical directors and other practitioners come in to work with our students.
