Work-based learning lies at the heart of our foundation degree in International Hospitality Management. It is your stepping stone to a rewarding career in one of largest and fastest growing sectors in the global economy.

All students on this course will:

  • Combine academic studies with real-world learning in work environments on this dynamic two-year degree
  • Build a strong platform for further studies: you can ‘top up’ this qualification to an honours degree with just one more year of study
  • Gain valuable professional experience through work placements which make up a significant proportion of the course
  • Study in the spa town of Buxton on the edge of the Peak District National Park with its many hotels, restaurants and visitor attractions
  • Work on real-world projects at our Devonshire Dome, a popular events venue featuring a fine dining restaurant, bistro and industry standard training kitchens
  • Network with some of the leading names in hospitality: we have links with the likes of Claridge’s, Marriott and Gleneagles
  • Learn from a teaching team with extensive industry experience and benefit from the support of a personal tutor throughout
  • Broaden your outlook on fascinating fieldtrips to hospitality venues: two UK-based residentials are included in your course fees
  • Achieve a qualification which looks great on your CV: our course has professional accreditation from the Institute of Hospitality (IoH)

Offering an exciting blend of theoretical knowledge and hands-on projects, the FdA International Hospitality Management equips you with all the skills that today’s employers are seeking.

From hotel services to conferences and banqueting, we cover every aspect of the guest experience. You will gain abilities not only in hospitality operations but also in research, marketing, purchasing, costing, supervision and business development so that you graduate with a well-rounded portfolio of knowledge.

At the end of the two years, the choice is yours: you can leave with a highly regarded FdA qualification or – if you have a minimum of a merit profile – can progress to the final stage of our BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management.

Work placements are an integral part of this course, equipping you with valued skills such as customer handling, problem solving, team working and communication. You will spend a significant proportion of your time gaining practical experience within the University’s own hospitality operations and with other employers in the sector.

Our students have enjoyed rewarding placements with the likes of Claridge’s, Skibo Castle, the Mandarin Hotel Group and Michelin-starred restaurants. Increasingly we offer opportunities for overseas placements too, including with Disney and Loews Hotels in America.

Real-world projects grounded in industry practice will enrich your learning further still. Our students have delivered successful events at the Dome, including parties for 700 staff from Chatsworth and our own graduation ceremonies. They have also run corporate events in locations like London’s National History Museum and taken part in international challenges such as the annual Passion for Hospitality debate.
