Msc Applied Sport And Exercise Sciences in University of East London (UEL)

If you want to work in the sport industry, an MSc will give you more experience and greater flexibility. Aimed at those with a sports science degree or similar, it’s carefully tailored to maximise your employability within sport and offers an unrivalled range of professional expertise and top class facilities. It will offer you the chance to study a generic MSc alongside a specialisation within different areas of Sport and Exercise Science.

This course is designed and tailored to your own preferred specialism in either of the following: Sport Psychology or Strength and Conditioning.

At the University of East London, we’ve benefited from substantial investment in sport, and in 2011 we were awarded the title ‘most improved sports University in the UK’ by the British University and Colleges Sports Association. Since then we’ve gone from strength to strength.

The course covers aspects of sports coaching, sports rehabilitation and analyses fitness through exercise and research which is conducted in our physiology labs.It emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease and explores human anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology which contribute to maintaining and improving health.

You will work alongside experts at our £21 million SportsDock complex at our Docklands campus, which houses a specialist strength and conditioning facility, physiology laboratories and new lecture theatres. You would expect no less from a university that's located so close to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

As you would expect from a university that’s such a close neighbour of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, our research is closely linked to the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

The focus of our work is twofold: to contribute to scientific knowledge about improving sports performance and to enhance the quality of life of people in our local community. Our research explores areas such as positive sport psychology, exercise physiology, nutrition and physical activity and wellbeing.

We’re committed to civic engagement – learning through real-life projects that benefit society – and our research impacts positively on the lives of our students and local people.

As part of the London 2012 Games legacy, for example, we’re involved in a huge, ongoing research project called ‘Newham Every Child a Sports Person’, which aims to get every Year 7 child at school in the London Borough of Newham to take up a sport and become physically active.

So far, findings from this project have been documented in four papers that have been submitted to various peer-reviewed journals, with a further six planned.

The Applied Sports Sciences Research Group focuses on how sport and physical activity impact on social, psychological and physiological outcomes. It has steadily increased its peer-reviewed research since being established in 2011.

Lindsay Bottoms, who has completed research at the Australian Institute of Sport, has published on the subject of "The effects of carbohydrate ingestion on the badminton serve following fatiguing exercise" in the Journal of Sports Sciences.

She has also presented a talk to the American College of Sports Medicine on "The placebo and nocebo effects of a ‘brand new sports drink’ on peak minute power during incremental arm crank ergometry."
