Product Design Engineering With Year In Industry Beng (hons) in University of Liverpool, UK
Product Design Engineering With Year In Industry Beng (hons) in University of Liverpool
Product Design Engineering with a Year in Industry BEng (Hons) brings together the disciplines of Design Engineering and New Product Development. As such, it builds on a combination of key elements of the school’s Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design programmes. Also, a year in Industry offers the opportunity for students to apply academic knowledge and professional skills in a real-life engineering practice.
The result is a truly modern engineering degree that will provide individuals with a solid technical grounding in engineering and a specialisation in design engineering and new product development, as well as practical working skills, preparing students for a successful career in industry.
Product Design Engineering with a Year in Industry BEng (Hons) brings together the traditional discipline of Design Engineering and New Product Development.
As such, the programme is built on a combination of key elements of the school’s Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Design programmes.
The programme is largely project-based. Students will work on several design engineering projects of increasing complexity. In years one and two, students will study core engineering subjects such as solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, materials, as well as electronics and computer programming. The understanding of the fundamental knowledge of engineering science in these subjects underpins the practice of product design engineering. Students will also learn fundamental product design techniques through subjects, such as design communication, human factors, product development and project management. This gives students a broad learning experience and an extended educational spectrum at a comprehensive level, combining the latest product design techniques with wide aspects of engineering.
In year three, students move on to study advanced engineering science and work on complex design engineering projects that reflect real life in industry. Unique to this programme, students will undertake a 300-hour individual product design engineering project on a topic of their choice, demonstrating design and engineering knowledge as well as practical design skills.
The Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate (CDIO) philosophy of teaching Design and Engineering to create Design Engineers for the future is adopted across all years of this programme. The blending of traditional technical knowledge delivery and teaching with hands-on project work is used to reinforce the understanding, comprehension and application of what has been learned in a practical context
Work placement/Year in industry
Students will spend a year of their degree on a work placement, approved by the School of Engineering, normally in an engineering or design-relevant industry or role. The Product Design Engineering with a Year in Industry BEng (Hons) programme is available to all students*. Whilst the School of Engineering and the University will provide the necessary support and guidance, it is the responsibility of the student to secure an industrial placement. Applicants should note that industrial placements are highly sought after and competition to be accepted into one can be significant. They therefore cannot be guaranteed. Students who fail to secure a suitable placement offer will transfer back to the standard version of the programme without a year in industry.
