Fashion Marketing BA (hons) in University of Northampton

Our Fashion Marketing undergraduate course draws upon the academic strength of the Faculty of Business and Law and the creative environment of the Fashion division in the Faculty of Arts, Science and Technology to provide a rigorous depth of knowledge and industry-relevant skills. At each level of the programme and through extra curricular activities you will be able to explore and advance your theoretical understanding and apply it to real industry issues and live projects.

Whatever your ambitions, we’re here to help you to achieve them. We’ll support you to identify the skills you’re learning during your course, find your strengths and secure practical experience so that when it comes to applying for jobs or further study you’ll feel confident in standing out from the crowd. We’ve created the Northampton Employment Promise because we are so confident that if you focus on your studies and complete one of our awards you’ll be highly employable by the time you graduate. Putting you in a great position to secure employment or continue your studies.

Course Details

During the Fashion Marketing course you will consider issues in campaign planning, consumer behaviour and contemporary issues in fashion and lifestyle marketing. Previous consultancy projects that have been undertaken by students for external clients include work with Pandora Jewellery, Mod Dolly, Biddle Sawyer, New Look and Swishing UK LTD. You will also prepare an individual portfolio that illustrates your knowledge, skills, work experience and volunteering activities that you will have developed over the duration of your course. The portfolio is designed to support you in securing employment within your chosen field.

The Fashion landscape is continually changing, making this a fascinating arena to explore, and a perfect time to develop your knowledge and understanding of the application of marketing in relation to the fashion industry. You will have the opportunity to gain vital professional experience and contacts at key events including:

  • London Fashion Week
  • London Collections Men
  • Graduate Fashion Week in London
  • New Designers

You will have the opportunity to participate in ‘live’ external projects, shows and exhibitions such as Graduate Fashion Week (GFW), as well as international study trips to fashion capitals like New York. Check out our New York trip Pinterest board to find out what you could be doing on the trip.

During your study you will have the opportunity to collaborate and work alongside other students so that you can develop the skills and understanding that you will need to forge partnerships between business-minded and creative people. We host a range of events at the University to provide you with valuable contacts with industry specialists and professionals that give you an up-to-date insight into the Fashion industry.

Optional Work Placement Year

You are encouraged to undertake a year-long placement in between Stages Two and Three of study. If you meet the entry criteria, and choose to take up a placement year you will find it an invaluable experience that helps you to apply your learning in your final year and prepares you for your career. Whilst on your Optional Work Placement Year you will study a 40 credit module ‘The Placement Year Experience – Organisations in Context’. We offer a lot of support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas. Previous work placements have included Tommy Hilfiger, Avon, John Lobb and Oxfam.

Methods of Learning

For this programme taught study would be a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops and usually 12 hours contact time per week. The sessions are supported and developed with academics within the University who have extensive specialist industry experience. Fashion, Marketing and Business representatives act as guest speakers as part of the lecture and workshop sessions.
