This Joint Honours course allows for you to study over two University department to gain an understanding of sport and managerial issues, this is developed through theoretical ideas and vocational learning. As this is a Joint Honours course you can make it flexible to your own interests. The core subjects provide a solid education in the essential areas, while there is a strong emphasis place on the application of theories and concepts to practical issues such as increasing sport participation, managing facilities, generating income and marketing.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

Course Details

The course is well suited for those intending to go on to further study or into full-time work in a range of career areas from general management to sport coaching.

You will be given the opportunity to work in a social enterprise – either an enterprise you set up with our support, or an existing enterprise. An optional work placement year is also available.

The modular curriculum allows study of all key disciplines in Sport and Management studies. As well as gaining a valuable degree, you will also have the opportunity to attain various professional qualifications and practical experience outside of the taught degree programme. After graduating, you will be equipped with transferable critical and analytical skills which will greatly enhance your employability.

Alongside developing your understanding and evaluation of sport in its many forms you will develop strong management skills. The course provides you with a progressive programme of study; the programme ensures you maintain flexibility and choice throughout your three years.

Each academic year equates to a stage. In stage one important core ideas, evidence and methods are introduced. This basic knowledge is built upon in stages two and three to foster a cutting-edge understanding of topics.

Methods of Learning

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical and laboratory workshops, computer assisted learning, independent and group work. Discussion and student participation is encouraged. Practical work will represent an important component of your course in each of the three years of study.

Assessments

A variety of assessment strategies are used at each level to ascertain your level of competence in a range of academic and transferable skills. These strategies include essays, practical reports, multiple-choice tests, oral presentations, time-constrained essays, seen and unseen examinations, critical reviews and group project work.

For this programme taught study would be a combination of lectures, seminars and workshops, usually for 12 hours per week. We recommend students spend 24 hours per week in self-directed study time.
