Astrophysics in Baylor University

Astrophysics is the branch of Astronomy that deals with the physics of space. It includes the physical properties of space objects (like planets, starts, galaxies and comets) as well as their interactions. Astrophysics includes many other disciplines from physics, such as electromagnetism, relativity, mechanics, and atomic and molecular physics. The Astrophysics major is offered as either a Bachelor of Science (BS) or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree. Available courses include:

  • Foundations of Astronomy
  • Intermediate Classical Mechanics
  • Intermediate Electricity and Magnetism
  • Introduction to Modern Cosmology

The BS in Astrophysics provides a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for graduate studies or careers in technology, medicine, education, law, finance industry, and research. The BA in Astrophysics provides a traditional liberal arts education with a solid set of core courses in astrophysics. Astrophysics is also offered as a secondary major and minor for students pursuing a different field of study.

The Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC) is a research park located near campus and is a tremendous resource for our undergraduate students. The BRIC provides researchers, industry/business clients and area institutions and organizations with more than 300,000 square feet of space designed and appointed for: laboratories, prototyping and testing, offices and workspace and workforce training. Many math and science undergraduate students are able to have hands-on experiences in this facility.

Baylor also offers several resources for astrophysics students. The Center for Astrophysics, Space Physics, and Engineering Research (CASPER) is located in the BRIC. CASPER consists of six independent research groups in both theoretical and experimental physics and allows undergraduates access to state of the art research that's happening.
