The Department of Social Work offers a four-year program of study leading to the bachelor of social work degree (BSW), which prepares students for entry-level generalist practice.
The program includes both classroom courses and field practicum experience in local social service agencies. Required courses fall under five content areas:
- Human behavior in the social environment
- Social welfare policy and services
- Research
- Social work practice
- Field practicum
Indiana State University is one of four universities in Indiana that offers the Child Welfare BSW Scholars Program. Students apply during the junior year of their BSW program. In addition, the University's Department of Social Work sponsors a number of activities and organizations that enable students to interact with other students and professionals, including the Phi Alpha Honor Society and the Student Social Work Association.
