Neighbourhoods and Deprivation
A major theme for the Institute is the relationship between problems of poverty, deprivation and policies for social inclusion and the local urban setting, particularly the neighbourhood but also the wider housing and labour market.

PhD Intercultural Research
The focus of our Intercultural Research at Heriot-Watt is on the interface between cultures. It seeks to build understanding of interactions between different cultures on a wide variety of levels, including sub-cultures, gender cultures and linguistic cultures.

Homelessness and Social Exclusion
This theme explores the experiences, needs and perspectives of the most vulnerable and excluded groups in the housing market (such as homeless people, those fleeing domestic violence, new migrants, young people, ex-offenders, people with substance misuse problems, and those at risk of losing their home through anti-social behaviour).
