- About Cleveland State University The Cleveland State University (CSU) was founded in the 1880s when the Cleveland YMCA began giving evening and day classes to disadvantaged students. The YMCA curriculum was restructured as the Association Institute in 1906, and Fenn College was founded in 1929. Cleveland State University was founded as a state-aided college in 1964, and it took over Fenn College's campus, curriculum, and faculty.
